MOSCOW, September 26 (RIA Novosti) - The US Federal Court has issued summons against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his alleged role in riots against Muslims in the state of Gujarat back in 2002 when he was a chief minister there, The New York Times reported Friday.
The complaint says that Modi is responsible for "organized violence, large-scale displacement of members of the Muslim minority population, and the continuing denial of justice," according to the news outlet.
In 2002, more than 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, died in three-day inter-communal violence in the western Indian state of Gujarat that erupted after 60 Hindus were killed in a train fire.
Modi has been accused of initiating and condoning the violence but in 2012 a court in India cleared him of complicity in the riots.
