KIEV, September 25 (RIA Novost) – A bill aimed at vetting officials, empowered to perform state or local self-government functions, was signed by the chairman of the Ukrainian parliament Thursday and will be submitted for signing to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko soon.

The document, approved by the parliament on a third try last week, was signed by Verkhovna Rada Chairman Oleksandr Turchynov during a briefing earlier in the day.

The measure is aimed specifically against officials who served under ousted president Viktor Yanukovych, and it is widely considered as a response to demands of Maidan activists to curb corruption in the echelons of power.

The bill was approved on a third attempt by 231 Verkhovna Rada lawmakers with the necessary minimum of 226 votes in favor of the legislation.

According to the law, individuals vying for posts in government agencies are subject to vetting. The law notes that those who held office from February 25, 2010, to February 22, 2014, have not been vetted. Ukrainian officials expect vetting to help revive people's trust in the authorities and reduce corruption to a minimum.

After the first try to pass the bill failed, lawmakers tried a number of times to resume its consideration to no avail. Only the third attempt was successful.
