MOSCOW, September 24 (RIA Novosti) – The underwater robotics industry is rapidly developing in China but still is reliant on imported components, Lin Yang from Shenyang Institute of Automation said Wednesday.

"Chinese technology is catching up with international standards but still suffering a slight shortfall in the quality of material and components," the expert said as quoted by Reference News daily (also known by its Chinese name Cankao Xiaoxi).

The Shenyang Institute of Automation (SIA) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has been developing underwater robots since the 1990s and invented China's first autonomous (AUV) and remotely operated underwater vehicles.

SIA's major achievements include the successful experimental deployment of Qianlong-1 AUV in the Eastern Pacific in October 2013. In June 2012, the manned submersible Jiaolong, whose control system was developed by SIA, reached a record depth of 7,020 meters in a sea trial in the Mariana Trench.
