MOSCOW, September 21 (RIA Novosti) - In a phone conversation with US Secretary of State John Kerry, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stressed the importance of coordinated steps of the international community for the fight against the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, Russian Foreign Ministry said Sunday in a press release.

"In the course of an exchange of views on the ways of counteracting the Islamic State terrorist group, S. Lavrov stressed the importance of coordinated, without double standards, actions of the international community for standoff to this threat," the press release reads.

Russian Foreign Minister also urged Kerry to refrain from misrepresenting facts "in the context of Syria."

According to the statement, Foreign Minister Lavrov also stressed the need for Washington to stick to the UN Charter, and the international law, as well as to respect Syria's sovereignty in the implementation of the US-led coalition's plans to fight the IS in the Middle East.

In June, the IS Sunni terrorist group proclaimed a caliphate state on the vast territories it had seized across Syria and Iraq. Its rapid advance made the United States begin carrying out airstrikes against the IS insurgents on the Iraqi territory in August. Revealing his strategy to fight the terrorist organization, US President Barack Obama announced the creation of a multinational coalition to fight the extremists, adding that he would not hesitate to authorize airstrikes on the Syrian territory – a move, opposed by Damascus and Moscow.
