MOSCOW, September 18 (RIA Novosti) – President of the United States, Barack Obama’s approval rating on handling terrorism has fallen to a record low of 41 percent, a joint poll by CBS News and New York Times released Thursday shows.

The approval rate fell to just 41 percent compared with the 72 percent approval in May 2011 when Osama bin Laden was killed by the US forces. The disapproval rate rose to 50 percent from 38 percent on March and 19 percent in May 2011.

As for the overall approval rate of the president’s policy, it currently stands at 40 percent, and is similar to George W. Bush's 37 percent approval in September 2006, before the midterm elections, when the Democratic Party captured control of the House and the Senate.

The newly-released study says 57 percent of those questioned believe President Obama is not “tough enough” with the Islamic State terrorist organization.

Terrorism was named as the second most important issue after the economy for both Republican and Democratic voters in the upcoming midterm election in November. And the falling approval of Barack Obama could lead to negative consequences for the Democratic Party at the ballot box.

On September 10, US President Barack Obama unveiled his strategy for defeating the Islamic State that includes authorizing US airstrikes against the group in Syria and continuing the airstrikes in Iraq launched by the country back in August.
