VR listener: “It is funny to see how so many critics here are convinced that none of these predicted break ups will happen. I think they must be really bad at history. Long periods of stability were the rarest in history.”

Picking up where we left off – readers and listeners are discussing the Scottish referendum. September 18 the people Scotland will vote whether they want to remain part of the United Kingdom – and the European Union – or become a separate country. For example, William Harvey wrote: “Cameron has no chance of being reelected, and a new Scottish government will remove the nuclear bases.”

Ibrahim Sani Maigana commented:

“If i was a Scottish i will be happy for Scotland to be fully independent from UK. Likewise William Wallace will feel the same in his grave. But if i was an English i will not be happy for Scotland to be separated from UK.”

“It is funny to see how so many critics here are convinced that none of these predicted break ups will happen. I think they must be really bad at history. Long periods of stability were the rarest in history. Even in (relatively) peaceful times big shifts and changes were normal. And some big powerful constructs have existed for an amazingly long time in our speedy age. And that's while we're at war. The NATO, Britain and the US among the lucky ones of course, are at war with the eastern world and culture. We're at the edge of massive shifts never seen before in our age. And it's about time in my opinion.”

Glen Davidson added:

“Britain uses Scotland for its men to die in America's wars. A Free Scotland would be much better, then being part of a regime like the British Government.”

Andy Mac has a radically different opinion:

“The yes camp is outnumbered by the no vote support by a long shot, papers & their poll predictions are all hype aimed at selling news papers... in the unlikely event of Scotland going independent they will go straight into default, FACT - Salmond has all these plans & ideas, the initial break away will cost around £6bn but then there's 144 uk departments that will have to be started from scratch in Scotland... so where will that money come from? the IMF which = default, then more borrowing & he can't pay that back... double default! just like greece! In the unlikely event of a yes vote, then they can be congratulated on accepting Moldova's old crown, Europe’s poorest nation. Our Tony Abbot was right to have a shot at Salmond…”
