Australia to Extend Military Cooperation with Kiev: Ukrainian President Press Service

Australia is going to enhance its military-technical cooperation with Ukraine and is planning to train soldiers and provide funding and equipment for the Ukrainian army, the official website of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko reported Wednesday.

KIEV, September 10 (RIA Novosti) - Australia is going to enhance its military-technical cooperation with Ukraine and is planning to train soldiers and provide funding and equipment for the Ukrainian army, the official website of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko reported Wednesday.

“Australia will consider the opportunity of enhancing military-technical cooperation and, as the first stage, will send the lot of military equipment and means of warming. Also, Australia is ready to begin programs of training and equipment of Ukrainian servicemen,” the press release says, following a phone conversation between Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Ukraine’s leader. Abbott also expressed Australia’s readiness to launch the the training programs for Ukrainian army servicemen, according to the press release.

Canberra will allocate $1 million for humanitarian aid to Ukraine via the International Committee of the Red Cross, Abbott was quoted as saying. In addition, he claimed he is going to visit Ukraine and that an Australian embassy is due to open in Kiev within the next few days.

In mid-August, Tony Abbott invited the Ukrainian president to visit Australia. Poroshenko accepted the invitation, but noted that he would do it after the situation in Ukraine is stable. The Ukrainian president also suggested opening an Australian embassy in Kiev.
