MOSCOW, September 8 (RIA Novosti) – Scientists from the Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) and the Institute of Automation and Control Processes have developed a unique method of inspecting high-voltage equipment to help prevent accidents and reduce risks of man-made disasters, an FEFU representative told RIA Novosti Monday.

"Reliability and security are the main requirements for high-voltage electric power equipment. For this reason, it is crucial to assess the condition of transformers, reactors, and circuit breakers. Transformers are checked not only visually, but by using a device that detects electromagnetic radiation. If during inspections, levels of electromagnetic radiation coming from the transformer are stable, then the transformer will be considered serviceable. If rates rise during each new inspection, then special attention is required in addition to more inspections through other methods,” the source said.

The new invention has several advantages over traditional methods of diagnosis. There is no need to disconnect equipment while a diagnosis takes place. Electromagnetic radiation defects are immediately detected and the development of special instruments for recording and processing the information is unnecessary. The most important development is that defects are found and fixed during very early stages of development.

"Electric power companies around the world are concentrated on developing systems to continuously monitor equipment. Traditional methods have been replaced by networks providing on-line diagnostics. The unique method developed by Far East scholars, should be an integral part of such monitoring systems. The invention is protected by 10 patents and has no analogues in the world,” the representative said.

Scientists are continuing to develop and improve the method with the aim to not only provide an overall equipment assessment, but also specify the type and location of defects.
