MOSCOW, September 1 (RIA Novosti) - The new Iraqi government, which is being formed at the moment, should be a broad coalition in order to conquer terrorism and bring stability back to the country, Iraqi President Fuad Masum said.

“Consultations concerning the formation of a new government allow us to expect it in the nearest future. A broad coalition needs to be set up that will be able to fight extremist ideology and terrorist groups, which are threatening not only local but international security,” Masum said.

He also added that once the cabinet of ministers was formed, fighting Islamic State (IS) militants would be a priority.

On August 11, the Iraqi president nominated Haider Abadi as the next prime minister and asked him to form a new government, which would include representatives of the country’s minorities. Abadi has been endorsed by the United States, the European Union, the United Nations, the League of Arab States, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

In a positive sign for the country engulfed in political turmoil, earlier in August, it was reported that Kurdish ministers rejoined the Iraqi administration after having previously suspended their participation in the government.

A Sunni militant group, the IS previously fought in Syria before it launched an offensive in Iraq in June, seizing large parts of the country with the aim of capturing Baghdad. In late June, the IS announced the establishment of an Islamic caliphate in Iraq and Syria.
