MOSCOW, August 29 (RIA Novosti) – McDonald’s said Friday it would briefly close 18 restaurants in Russia in September for planned renovation and upgrades that would take several days.

“The renovation will take several days after which the restaurants will resume their work in normal regime,” the company said in a statement.

The restaurants planned for renovation are located in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Ekaterinburg, Petrozavodsk, Rostov-on-Don as well as two towns in the Moscow Region.

Earlier in the day, McDonald’s said that about 100 inspections are currently underway at the company’s fast-food restaurants in various Russian regions.

Last week, Russia’s consumer watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, launched sanitation checks on the fast-food chain in 18 regions throughout central Russia. As of today, 12 restaurants have been temporary closed due to sanitary violations.

In total, McDonald’s has more than 430 restaurants in 75 Russian regions.

According to a poll conducted by SuperJob’s Research Center, 62 percent of Russian respondents would support the closure of all McDonald’s restaurants in Russia.

The McDonald’s corporation, founded in 1940, is the world’s largest hamburger fast-food chain.
