MOSCOW, August 28 (RIA Novosti) - Disintegration of Ukraine is an inevitable process, former Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) Prime Minister Alexander Borodai said in an interview with Russian online newspaper Gazeta.ru published Thursday.

“I am convinced that the process of disintegration of the Ukrainian state is absolutely inevitable from the standpoint of history and philosophy. Actually, this state just happened to be a buffer zone between the Russian World, Russia, and the West. The question always was on what side Ukraine belongs? It is either the eastern edge of the Western World – or the western edge of Russia,” Borodai said, explaining that the term “edge” is not to be considered disparaging, as Vladivostok, for example, may be referred to as the eastern edge of Russia.

He has also noted, that Ukraine has historically been positioned at the crossroads of mentalities and religions.

According to Borodai, the multiple political shake-ups that Ukraine has gone through after the fall of Soviet Union seriously affected the country’s economy and its people’s moral state, as corruption became ubiquitous. “Independent existence is impossible for it, especially given the sad condition that it has been in for the last 23 years ,” he concluded.

Since mid-April, Kiev has been conducting a military operation in eastern Ukraine, targeting the cities of Donetsk and Luhansk, where residents are unhappy with the February overturn of political regime. In May, following regional referendums, both Luhansk and Donetsk proclaimed themselves people’s republics.

Borodai was prime minister of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic from May 16 to August 7, when he resigned, becoming the first deputy prime minister and chief adviser to his successor, Alexander Zakharchenko.
