MOSCOW, August 27 (RIA Novosti) – The Russian Foreign Ministry is urging Israel and Palestinian authorities to abide by the Cairo-backed ceasefire agreement reached on August 26, the ministry said in statement Wednesday.

“Moscow welcomes the Palestinian-Israeli agreements reached. We are calling on both sides to strictly abide by them in order to create an opportunity to break the vicious cycle of mutual violence and move toward a mutually acceptable resolution to the problem of Gaza that would guarantee violent confrontations will not recur in the future,” the Information and Press Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Israel and Palestine agreed on an open-ended ceasefire beginning at 7 pm Tuesday evening.

Under the deal brokered by the Egyptian government Israel is to open border crossings to allow humanitarian aid and construction materials to enter Gaza, and is to extend the permitted fishing zone to six miles off the Gaza coast.

On July 8, Israel launched Operation Protective Edge against the Hamas movement in response to the group’s rocket attacks.

On July 17, the Israelis launched a ground offensive, aiming to destroy Hamas rocket launchers and the network of tunnels along the Gaza border with western Israel.

On Wednesday the Israeli army said in a statement that since the Tuesday ceasefire began, there have been no reports of violence.
