MOSCOW, August 24 (RIA Novosti) – Egypt on Sunday denied any link to unclaimed airstrikes that hit military camps in the Libyan capital Tripoli earlier this week, according to Agence France-Presse.

"Egypt denies categorically reports and claims that Egyptian military aircraft struck sites held by militias in the Libyan capital Tripoli," the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

On Friday night, an airstrike carried out by unidentified warplanes on positions held by Islamist militiamen around the Libyan capital's airport left at least 13 dead. Last week, a similar raid took place.

According to Sky News Arabia, the last week’s attack was blamed on Libya's ex-general Khalifa Haftar, whose air force may have targeted positions of conflicting Zintan and Misrata rebel groups.

Libya’s renegade commander Haftar declared a war on Islamist extremists in the country’s second largest city Benghazi several months ago. Until now, his fighters have only been active in the east of the country.

Libya has been gripped by infighting involving various militias for months, prompting the West to brand it as a failed state after the NATO-backed ouster of Libya’s leader Muammar Gaddafi.
