UNITED NATIONS, August 21 (RIA Novosti) - UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Valerie Amos on Thursday met with Ukraine's Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk and “called for the fostering of a more enabling environment for humanitarian action,” the UN said.

Amos is scheduled to travel from Kyiv to eastern Ukraine. The trip comes amid a deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in the region, and the delay of the Russian aid convoy at the border.

The UN said Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's Under Secretary General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltmen met on August 20 with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and “reiterated the Secretary General's concern with the situation in Eastern Ukraine and his hope for a peaceful political solution to the conflict to save lives and avoid a humanitarian crisis.”

Earlier in the day, the Russian Foreign Ministry called on the UN Security Council to make a statement about the need of a ceasefire in Ukraine to ensure safe delivery of Russian humanitarian aid.

A convoy of around 280 trucks carrying some 2,000 tons of humanitarian cargo is currently undergoing customs checks on the Russian-Ukrainian border.
