UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman is expected to visit Ukraine later on Tuesday to meet with high-ranking government officials, the United Nations announced Tuesday.

UNITED NATIONS, August 19 (RIA Novosti) – UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman is expected to visit Ukraine later on Tuesday to meet with high-ranking government officials, the United Nations announced Tuesday.

“Later today the Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman will be traveling to Ukraine, Kiev. He is expected to hold meetings with senior government officials, UN colleagues and international partners in pursuit of the good offices of the Secretary-General,” the statement said.

The announcement came a day after Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed his concern over the recent attack on internally displaced people, trying to leave the Luhansk region.

“[Secretary General Ban Ki-moon] is deeply disturbed by …alarming reports regarding an attack on column of internally displaced persons, attempting to leave the Luhansk region. He urges all sides to respect the rules governing the status of IDPs and refugees and to allow safe passage to anyone attempt to leave areas of active military operations,” according to the statement.

Along with Tuesday's announcement of Under-Secretary-General Feltman's travel to Kiev, the UN said of the shelling of the IDPs near Luhansk.

“These are issues Mr. Feltman will take up when he travels to Ukraine,” the UN said in a statement.
