UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the killing of two UN peacekeepers in a suicide attack on a patrol base in northern Mali on Sunday.

UNITED NATIONS, August 17 (RIA Novosti) – UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the killing of two UN peacekeepers in a suicide attack on a patrol base in northern Mali on Sunday.

“[I am] deeply saddened by the death today of two United Nations peacekeepers and the wounding of at least seven others in a suicide attack in Ber”.

The UN chief also wished a full and speedy recovery to those who were injured in today’s attack and those who were injured in two earlier attacks this week.

Ban stressed in his statement that such incidents will not “deter the United Nations from its efforts to support the Malian people in their search for peace in their country.”

The attack took place on Saturday morning when a vehicle exploded next to the patrol base in the village of Ber in Mali's Timbuktu region.

According to a representative of the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Mali (MINUSMA), the killed peacekeepers were from Burkina Faso, though official information revealing their nationalities has not been released yet.

Three more UN peacekeepers were injured in two separate attacks earlier this week.
