MOSCOW, August 12 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's cities of Kursk and Murmansk, as well as several Northern Fleet bases, will commemorate on Tuesday the 14th anniversary of the deaths of the Kursk submarine crew.

Commemorative events started with a liturgy for the perished sailors in the morning in the village of Vidyayevo, where the nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine set off from on its last journey, Northern Fleet spokesman Vadim Serga, said.

The ceremony in Kursk began at 11:00 a.m. (07:00 GMT) with the laying down flowers at the memorial of World War II victims and the monument to the Kursk's crewmembers with the participation of regional authorities, military units, youth groups, navy veterans and the perished sailors’ family members, according to the city's website.

Mourning ceremonies at Northern Fleet bases were timed to finish at 11:28 a.m. – the time the submarine sank –with the sound of a ship's horn and a moment of silence.

The Russian nuclear submarine Kursk sank in the Barents Sea on August 12, 2000, following an onboard torpedo explosion, killing all 118 crewmembers.
