South Korea has found traces of radiation in scrap metal imports from Japan and will return them, the South Korean Nuclear Safety and Security Commission said Monday.

MOSCOW, August 11 (RIA Novosti) – South Korea has found traces of radiation in scrap metal imports from Japan and will return them, the South Korean Nuclear Safety and Security Commission said Monday.

“The commission has installed radiation detectors at all major ports to prevent an inflow of contaminated materials,” an official press release said, Yonhap News Agency reported.

According to the document, traces of cesium-137 were found in about 20 kilograms of scrap metal that arrived as part of a 20-ton metal shipment at a seaport in Gyeongsang Province on Thursday.

South Korea banned fishery imports from eight Japanese prefectures and intensified its nuclear monitoring practices following the Fukushima nuclear accident in March 2011.
