MOSCOW, August 11 (RIA Novosti) – More than 150 Chinese officials, corrupt or suspected of corruption, are currently at large in the United States, China Daily quoted a Chinese official as saying Monday.

“The US has become the top destination for Chinese fugitives fleeing the law,” Liao Jinrong from the International Cooperation Bureau of the Chinese Public Security Ministry said, the newspaper reported.

The official added that China faces hurdles in getting back the fugitives who have fled to the United States because the countries do not have an extradition treaty.

Another senior Cooperation Bureau official, Wang Gang, told China Daily that the US and Chinese judicial authorities basically have only one platform to discuss issues of mutual concern – an annual meeting taking place in August or September.

“It’s not enough,” noted Wang. He added that the Public Security Ministry attempted to set up an annual high-level meeting to discuss the issue of economic fugitives with the US Homeland Security Department, China Daily reported.

Only two wanted government officials have been brought back to China over the last two decades. One of them was former Bank of China branch manager Yu Zhendong, who was found guilty of embezzling $482 million in public funds.

In July, the Public Security Ministry launched “Fox Hunt 2014,” a campaign aimed at hunting down Beijing’s fugitives. The operation involves setting up special action teams and strengthening cooperation with other countries, the department’s vice-minister Liu Jinguo told China Daily.
