North Korea’s new highest value banknotes no longer picture portrait of the nation founder and “Eternal President of the country” Kim Il-sung, reports South Korean Daily The Chosun.

MOSCOW, August 11 (RIA Novosti) — North Korea’s new highest value banknotes no longer picture portrait of the nation founder and “Eternal President of the country” Kim Il-sung, reports South Korean Daily The Chosun.

Instead, 5,000 notes have an image of his childhood home in Mangyongdae.

Both sides of the recently announced 5,000 won note feature the supposed birthplace of the long-standing North Korean leader.

In 2009, Kim Il-sung was also dropped from the 2,000 and 1,000 won notes, when the country carried out a currency reform aimed at curbing inflation and undermining the local black market.

The recent introduction of a new 5,000 won note also sparked fears of an upcoming reform. But according to The Chosun, “the reason might be simply consistency, because the W2,000 and W1,000 notes depict the birthplaces of Kim Jong-il and his mother Kim Jong-suk.”

The 5,000 won note is North Korea's largest denomination, worth around US$50.

An average salary of a North Korean worker is about W3,000 a month.
