A study on the use of antibiotics by the Indian Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) reveals rampant use of antibiotics in poultry, which has led to plummeting chicken sales across the country, The New Indian Express reports.

MOSCOW, August 6 (RIA Novosti) – A study on the use of antibiotics by the Indian Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) reveals rampant use of antibiotics in poultry, which has led to plummeting chicken sales across the country, The New Indian Express reports.

The study found that a cocktail of three antibiotics is used at the country’s poultry farms, according to Dubai’s Gulf News. The Dubai website added that in many cases poultry farms mix antibiotics with feed to promote growth and prevent disease and infection.

The report has caused a crisis in shops that may very well also affect the restaurant business, The Poultry Site reports citing the Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association state general secretary.

Dr. A.V. Jayakrishnan of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called on the government to take a tough stance against poultry farmers for unregulated use of antibiotics, according to The Poultry Site.

In response State Animal Husbandry Department additional director Dr. V. Brahmanandan said “appropriate actions will be taken as per the directions issued from the government to address the health concerns and woes faced by the farmers,” The Poultry Site reports.

The CSE suggests that the study is preliminary and that the effects could be even more extensive.
