Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Vitaly Yarema said on Saturday that he hopes to hold negotiations with Moscow on the case of Ukrainian pilot Nadezhda Savchenko, detained in Russia and accused of being involved in a mortar attack that killed two Russian journalists in June.

KIEV, August 2 (RIA Novosti) – Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Vitaly Yarema said on Saturday that he hopes to hold negotiations with Moscow on the case of Ukrainian pilot Nadezhda Savchenko, detained in Russia and accused of being involved in a mortar attack that killed two Russian journalists in June.

“I am writing letters regarding our pilot Savchenko to Russian Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika, but no reply has been received. I hope that this problem over the lack of communication will be solved and we will have normal cooperation,” Yarema told journalists at a briefing.

Russia’s Investigative Committee said Savchenko was detained in Russia where she fled under the guise of a refugee.

Savchenko is currently held in custody in the Russian city of Voronezh. Russian investigators claim that she was a fire spotter during a mortar attack near the eastern Ukrainian city of Luhansk on June 17.

As a result of this attack, two Russian journalists, Igor Kornelyuk and Anton Voloshin, were killed.

Savchenko has been charged with aiding the killing of the journalists. The Ukrainian pilot said she only participated in rescuing those injured who were taken out of the battle zones.

The defense of Savchenko earlier announced plans to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) against her arrest.
