KIEV, July 31 (RIA Novosti) – Ukraine’s parliament did not accept the resignation of Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, as only 16 lawmakers submitted votes of no confidence, while 109 voted against accepting the resignation.
“Only 16 parliamentarians supported the resignation of Yatsenyuk’s government. This means that the government received a vote of confidence and thus the efficient work on the functioning of the essential parameters of the budget have resumed today,” Batkyvshchina party leader Serhiy Sobolev said.
To succeed, the vote needed the support of 226 parliamentarians.
On July 24, Yatsenyuk announced his resignation during a parliament session after the end of the coalition was announced and lawmakers failed to pass a number of key laws. According to Ukrainian law, the parliament must vote to accept or decline the prime minister’s resignation.
Parliament Speaker Oleksandr Turchynov on July 24 officially declared the end of the coalition which had been formed after the change of power in February, and consisted of 262 deputies from Batkivshchina, UDAR, Svoboda and several groups of parliamentarians that joined them. The UDAR and Svoboda parties initiated the decision to allow the president to dissolve the dysfunctional, in their opinion, parliament and announce early parliamentary elections.
