DONETSK, July 15 (RIA Novosti) - The Ukrainian military has delivered airstrikes on the city of Snizhne in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk Region, striking a residential building and leaving at least three dead, local militia told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.
The rockets were fired at around 6:30 a.m. (07:30 GMT) hitting a 5-storey house while many residents were still at home. Three people, including an elderly couple, were killed.
Local residents told RIA Novosti earlier that they heard the sound of planes. One of the building’s entrances was completely destroyed.
The local hospital confirmed to RIA Novosti that many people were injured.
A doctor said rescuers have just started digging through the rubble.
Large groups of independence supporters are currently centered in the city of Snizhne and its vicinity, the scene of bloody battles with Ukrainian security troops.
The fighting between the Ukrainian Army and independence supporters in the southeast of Ukraine intensified dramatically in early July, when President Petro Poroshenko decided not to extend a 10-day ceasefire in the region.
Russia has repeatedly condemned Kiev’s actions and has urged authorities to stop the bloodshed.
