EU foreign affairs ministers have decided to send a police mission to Ukraine for two years, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius said Monday.

LUXEMBURG, June 23 (RIA Novosti) - EU foreign affairs ministers have decided to send a police mission to Ukraine for two years, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius said Monday.

“We made today the decision concerning the mission of the general security policy in order to assist in the security field. We expect the mission [to work] for two years,” Linkevicius said.

Amid running battles in Ukraine’s southeastern regions, various global organizations have sent observers to monitor the situation in the country.

In late March, a multinational group of experts under the aegis of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) arrived in the crisis-torn country.

For about three months the OSCE observers have been working in southeastern Ukraine, but the organization made a decision in early June to temporarily reduce the number of monitors following repeated cases of detentions.

Earlier in the day, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko called for an expansion of the OSCE special monitoring mission, saying it was highly important to stabilize the situation in the country.

Additionally, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights publishes regular reports on the situation in Ukraine based on the data provided by the UN Observation Mission for Human Rights working in the country.
