Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said at a meeting with his deputy ministers on Monday that he had discussed the situation of Ukrainian refugees with President Vladimir Putin.

GORKI, Moscow region, June 9 (RIA Novosti) – Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said at a meeting with his deputy ministers on Monday that he had discussed the situation of Ukrainian refugees with President Vladimir Putin.

“As for assistance to refugees and humanitarian aid to Ukrainian citizens temporarily staying on the territory of our country I issued a corresponding order to cabinet ministers and governors at a government session; this work has already started, I have discussed this with the president this morning,” Medvedev said.

Deputy Prime Minister for Social Affairs Olga Golodets was tasked with overseeing this issue.

Medvedev also recalled that he had already instructed Deputy Prime Ministers Igor Shuvalov and Dmitry Kozak to “facilitate all humanitarian issues” and added that “in case the solution to financial problems is required we will return to this [question].”

Amid running battles between independence supporters and the Ukrainian army conducting a military operation in Ukraine’s east, many residents are fleeing their cities.

Over the past few days the situation in the region has sharply deteriorated, triggering a flow of refugees pouring in from Ukraine to the neighboring Rostov region in Russia.

According to the region’s government, over 7,300 Ukrainian citizens have entered the Rostov region in the past day, with some 320 accommodated on its territory.
