MOSCOW, June 5 (RIA Novosti) – Russian President Vladimir Putin has granted an Order of Friendship to the deputy chairman of Ukraine’s Anti-Fascism Committee in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, according to a decree published on the Kremlin’s official website.

Timofei Makhonyok was awarded the Russian state decoration, reserved for foreign nationals, in recognition of his “substantial contribution to the strengthening and development of friendship and co-operation with the Russian Federation.”

The award took place against the backdrop of the ongoing military operation in Ukraine’s southeast. The crackdown has been underway since mid-April after the region rose up in protest against the nationalist-backed coup in Kiev.

In spring, Kiev authorities launched what they called an "anti-terrorist" operation in the east of Ukraine to suppress pro-independence protests, with most of the clashes reported in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

According to a RIA Novosti source in Kiev, Ukraine’s President-elect Petro Poroshenko ordered the military to “purge” the turbulent southeastern Ukraine of resistance forces. The billionaire candy-maker allegedly set the deadline for the operation for June 7, the day he will be sworn into office.
