Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday he has no plans of remaining president for life.

MOSCOW, April 17 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday he has no plans of remaining president for life.

While answering a question during a live Q&A session with the public on whether he will remain president for life, Putin responded: “No.”

Putin was president for two consecutive, four-year terms, from 2000 to 2008 and returned to the presidency in May 2012 after serving four years as prime minister under President Dmitry Medvedev.

The Russian Constitution was amended in 2008 to increase the presidential term to six years from four previously. Under the law, the same person may not hold the presidency for more than two consecutive terms, so Putin could be re-elected to a fourth, six-year term in 2018, keeping him in the presidency until 2024.
