MOSCOW, April 17 (RIA Novosti) – Nearly two out of three Americans are suspicious of the possibility of drones flying in US airspace, according to a survey published by the Pew Research Center Thursday.

The poll results revealed that 63 percent of US citizens believe it would be a change for the worse if drones, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), are allowed to fly in US skies.

Elder Americans showed even higher distrust towards drones. Only 16 percent of people aged 65 or above could see any benefit to drone use, while 30 percent of people between the age range of 18-29 thought UAVs would have a net positive impact on society.

Women were far more hesitant to approve of drones than men, with only 18 percent of female respondents giving a thumbs up, compared with 27 percent of males.

Some US companies plan to deploy UAVs in the near future. Amazon has been testing robots for home delivery, while internet giants Facebook and Google have both bought out companies producing high-altitude drones.

The US Federal Aviation Administration is expected to release guidelines for commercial drone use next year.
