ROSA KHUTOR, Russia, March 15 (R-Sport) – Switzerland's Christoph Kunz grabbed gold in the Saturday's giant slalom race at the Sochi Paralympics, as all the main favorites faltered.
The 31-year-old managed to eliminate half-a-second gap to Corey Peters of New Zealand on the second run and clinched his second career Paralympic title.
Peters' silver became the first medal at the Sochi Games for his country, as he finished 0.47 seconds behind Kunz.
Austria's Roman Rabl won his third bronze on the slopes of Rosa Khutor, trailing Peters by just 0.11 seconds.
Downhill and super G champion Akira Kano of Japan and Canada's Josh Dueck, who triumphed in the super combined, crashed out on the first run.
The race used the principle of so-called “calculated time,” in which each athlete’s time is modified by a percentage reflecting the extent of their disability.
Earlier in the day, the 16-year-old Canadian skier Mac Marcoux won the event in the visually impaired category, while France's Vincent Gauthier-Manuel was the fastest among the standing athletes.
