One Killed in Kazakhstan Goldmine Blast

At least one person was killed in an explosion Wednesday at a goldmine in a northern region in the Central Asian nation of Kazakhstan, local news agency Novosti-Kazakhstan has reported.

ASTANA, February 26 (RIA Novosti) – At least one person was killed in an explosion Wednesday at a goldmine in a northern region in the Central Asian nation of Kazakhstan, local news agency Novosti-Kazakhstan has reported.

The agency cited the prosecutor’s office in the Akmola province as saying the accident happened at the Aksu mine owned by KazakhGold, or Kazakhaltyn.

Police received a call from mine managers after the blast, which claimed the life of worker identified as having been born in 1982, Novosti-Kazakhstan reported.

Exploration at the Aksu mine began in 1929 after a gold discovery at the site, according to the company’s website.
