Many associate Russian winters with horse-drawn sleighs and troikas, but most of them are only seen in the movies. A group of enthusiasts is attempting to revive the traditional troikas in Russia by inviting the public to share in the beauty.

Many associate Russian winters with horse-drawn sleighs and troikas, but most of them are only seen in the movies. A group of enthusiasts is attempting to revive the traditional troikas in Russia by inviting the public to share in the beauty.

The first documentation of troikas was in the 1560s and teams of troikas were historically used to travel between cities, carrying passengers and mail alike until the industrial revolution, which brought with it trains, planes and automobiles. Out of only 12 professional troika teams remaining in Russia, six of them gathered outside Moscow for traditional winter entertainment for all.
