A former Russian traffic police chief was killed by a mentally ill teenager after refusing to give him a cigarette, investigators said Tuesday.

MOSCOW, February 11 (RIA Novosti) – A former Russian traffic police chief was killed by a mentally ill teenager after refusing to give him a cigarette, investigators said Tuesday.

The body of Vladimir Trachuk, former head of traffic police in the southern city of Abakan, was found on the street with multiple stab wounds on January 30, a statement by the country's Investigative Committee said.

Police detained a 19-year-old patient of a local mental hospital, saying that he stabbed Trachuk to death after approaching the ex-official, a stranger, for a cigarette and being denied.

Investigators said in the statement that the suspect had confessed to the murder.
