MOSCOW, January 29 (RIA Novosti) – A nature reserve in Russia’s North Caucasus sustained damage estimated at nearly $11 million as a result of improper construction work, prosecutors said Wednesday.

The Prosecutor General’s Office said in a statement that violations during construction of a water supply pipeline resulted in unauthorized removal of soil over a total area of more than 17,000 square meters.

Permission to build the pipeline was issued without a proper study of the environmental consequences, prosecutors said.

The project was carried out as part of the federal program to develop the North Caucasus and southern Russia territories. Authorities hired a private contractor to complete the work.
