MOSCOW, January 17 (RIA Novosti) – A deputy chief of police in a Moscow district hit by nationalist violence last year has been arrested for taking protection money from an illegal gambling business, investigators said Friday.
The deputy police chief of the capital's southern Biryulyovo district, who was not identified, was arrested Thursday evening, the Investigative Committee said in a statement.
Officials did not identify the business in question or say whether a criminal case has been opened.
Several top police officials in the Biryulyovo district were fired last fall after violent nationalist riots over the murder of a local resident, allegedly by an Azerbaijani national.
President Vladimir Putin sacked the police chief of Moscow’s southern district and the head of the Western Biryulyovo police department over the anti-migrant protests in October.
