MINSK, January 12 (RIA Novosti) – A prominent Belarusian opposition member said Sunday he has been detained by police and faces trial next week for violating the rules of holding mass actions.

Anatoly Lebedko, the leader of the United Civil Party, held an action in Minsk Sunday to gather signatures against the planned introduction of a transport tax in Belarus.

Lebedko said on Facebook he held another mass action last Sunday, calling for the Belarusian government to resign. The trial is scheduled to take place on Tuesday morning.

The human rights situation in Belarus remains of particular concern. The government has been also criticized for its treatment of the opposition, many of whose leaders have been jailed.
