MOSCOW, November 20 (R-Sport) – A football fan who waved around a swastika flag during a Russian Cup game has been sentenced to seven days in prison, local police said Wednesday.

A police statement said the man, whose name has not been disclosed, was convicted of displaying fascist emblems and symbols.

Such an act was criminalized last year and carries a maximum penalty of 15 days in prison along with a fine equivalent to 10 times the minimum wage.

All that is known about the suspect is that he is from the Russia’s central Vladimir Region.

Earlier this month, Spartak Moscow appealed to Russian police to prosecute those who waved the Nazi flag during the game against second-division team Shinnik Yaroslavl.

The October 30 game suffered fan violence and was held up for half an hour while police fired water cannons at brawling fans.

The Russian football association fined Spartak $18,500 and ordered the team to play two games behind closed doors, with Shinnik getting a three-game fan ban.

Spartak Moscow owner Leonid Fedun claimed that the flag-waver was a "professional provocateur" out to sabotage Spartak's season.
