TASHKENT, November 1 (RIA Novosti) – A high-ranking Chinese security official said the East Turkestan Islamic Movement was behind a deadly vehicle attack in the heart of Beijing earlier this week.

An SUV ploughed through a crowd near the Tiananmen Gate on Monday before crashing and bursting into flames, killing two tourists as well as three people in the car.

The East Turkestan Islamic Movement, often blamed by the Chinese authorities for leading an insurgency in the northwestern Xinjiang region, has not claimed responsibility for the attack. The movement is designated a terrorist group by the United Nations.

Meng Jianzhu, who oversees legal and law enforcement issues for the ruling Communist party, made the statement at a meeting with Uzbek President Islam Karimov in Tashkent on Thursday, the Uzbek leader’s press service said Friday.

The Chinese official said he had arrived in Uzbekistan to discuss regional security issues in the wake of the attack, including broader cooperation within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the Beijing-based security organization of which both countries are members.
