Ecuador’s president on Tuesday reaffirmed the possibility of granting political asylum to fugitive US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden.

MOSCOW, October 29 (RIA Novosti) – Ecuador’s president on Tuesday reaffirmed the possibility of granting political asylum to fugitive US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden.

“If at some point Mr. Snowden finds himself on Ecuador’s territory or comes to our diplomatic mission in some country and requests political asylum, we will accept that request, consider all legal and other aspects, and make a decision,” Rafael Correa told a news conference after a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.

Correa stressed that international law and Ecuador’s constitution “enable our government to grant political asylum to whomever it deems fit.”

Snowden, facing espionage charges in the United States, has been granted temporary asylum in Russia.
