A US technology firm and Amsterdam-based telecom giant VimpelCom have announced plans to partner to offer improved personal safety and data security for smartphone users in Russia.

WASHINGTON, September 13 (RIA Novosti) – A US technology firm and Amsterdam-based telecom giant VimpelCom have announced plans to partner to offer improved personal safety and data security for smartphone users in Russia.

A Russian language version of Snap One, Inc.’s security application “Snap Secure” will be marketed as “Data Safe” to subscribers in Russia of mobile operator Beeline, a VimpelCom subsidiary. It will work on phones using the Android operating system.

In their announcement Thursday, VimpelCom and SnapOne promised users “data backup and restoration; virus, spyware and spam prevention; privacy management and protection.”

In addition, the application purports to improve the security of the user’s physical person and property as it allows “real-time tracking and location of family members; remote location and control of lost or stolen phones and tablets; and remote data wipe capability.”

The agreement with Vimpelcom marks the first time Princeton, New Jersey-based SnapOne has embarked upon a co-branding partnership with a mobile operator and service provider, the statement said.

VimpelCom, headquartered in Amsterdam, describes itself as “one of the world’s largest integrated telecommunications services operators” on its website where it states that as of June 30, 2013 it had 215 million mobile subscribers in Russia, the former Soviet Union and beyond.
