A 16-year-old girl in south Russia was stabbed in the chest by a relative at a police precinct for refusing to marry the groom of her parents’ choice, investigators said Monday.

MOSCOW, September 9 (RIA Novosti) – A 16-year-old girl in south Russia was stabbed in the chest by a relative at a police precinct for refusing to marry the groom of her parents’ choice, investigators said Monday.

The girl ran away from home in a bid to escape an arranged marriage, but was found by relatives and taken home.

The teenager then jumped from a window and fled her home again after her father allegedly said he wanted to kill her for “bringing disgrace to her family,” investigators said.

She was taken to the police precinct by neighbors, and was being attended to there by a doctor, a police officer and an education department official when “numerous relatives” showed up. Her “uncle entered the room and stabbed her in the chest,” she said, according to investigators.

“The women could not have stopped the assailant,” the Investigative Committee said, adding that police officers have been accused of failing to ensure the girl's safety.

The attacker fled the scene and the girl was taken to the hospital where she is under guard. The victim’s relatives told police they “did not know” the attacker. An investigation is ongoing.
