MOSCOW, September 5 (RIA Novosti) – Moscow’s notorious traffic jams reached an overall length of 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) on Thursday evening, an analyst with the Yandex.Probki online traffic-monitoring site told RIA Novosti.

“The heavy traffic is being caused by rain and the start of the business season” after the summer, analyst Leonid Madnikov said, adding that the southern part of the city was the most congested.

TomTom, a Dutch company specializing in GPS navigation technology, in April rated Moscow as the city with the world’s worst traffic jams.

Acting Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin has pledged to eliminate Moscow's traffic jams by increasing the number of parking lots, developing public transportation and building more roads.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has even started using a helicopter to commute in order to avoid creating more traffic jams in the capital.
