Waters of the Amur River near the flood-hit city of Khabarovsk in Russia’s Far East continue to steadily rise, gaining four centimeters over the past 24 hours, local meteorologists said in a statement on Tuesday.

KHABAROVSK, August 27 (RIA Novosti) - Waters of the Amur River near the flood-hit city of Khabarovsk in Russia’s Far East continue to steadily rise, gaining four centimeters over the past 24 hours, local meteorologists said in a statement on Tuesday.

“As of 8:00 a.m. local time on Sunday, water levels of the Amur River near the city of Khabarovsk stood at 735 centimeters [24.1 feet],” the statement said adding that the level is expected to rise by another 5-10 centimeters in the next 48 hours, the statement said.

According to earlier forecasts, water levels are expected to increase up to 780 centimeters by the end of the month and could reach 830 centimeters, when the flooding reaches its forecasted peak in September.

Almost 40 towns and villages are flooded across the Khabarovsk Territory and over 1,000 residential buildings have been inundated. Over 2,200 people, including some 460 children, have been evacuated from the affected areas.
