MOSCOW, August 7 (RIA Novosti) – Police have arrested a man in west Russia accused of beating to death an elderly woman in order to steal 400 rubles ($12), the regional Investigative Committee said Wednesday.
Investigators say the suspect, a resident of the village of Orlovo in the Livensky district of the Oryol Region, entered the house of the 83-year-old retiree last month and demanded money.
“The retiree refused to hand over her savings to the offender, after which he started beating her about the head and body with a frying pan and a crutch,” the Investigative Committee said.
“When the victim fell down and could not put up any more resistance, the suspect took 400 rubles from her and fled the crime scene.”
The elderly woman was found by her nephew and taken to the hospital where she died several days later.
The suspect faces several criminal charges, including willfully causing grievous bodily harm, which carries a prison term of up to 11 years.
