Police in Russia’s Far Eastern Kamchatka Territory are investigating the death of a newborn baby, believed to have been burned by his mother in a stove.

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, July 26 (RIA Novosti) - Police in Russia’s Far Eastern Kamchatka Territory are investigating the death of a newborn baby, believed to have been burned by his mother in a stove.

The regional police department said on Friday a 30-year-old mother of three children from the town of Ust-Kamchatsky told police during questioning that she had concealed her pregnancy from her partner and relatives and tried to abort the baby on her own.

“For several months she was trying to terminate her unwanted pregnancy: she took pills and made injections,” police said in a statement.

On July 12, while alone in her house, she delivered a baby, who she said had showed no signs of life.

“The mother wrapped the newborn in a plastic bag. After taking a shower and changing her clothes, she headed to an abandoned country house on the outskirts of the town. She threw the body of the baby into a stove, where she had lit a fire,” the statement reads.

The regional branch of the Russian Investigative Committee said a criminal case has been launched.
