MAGADAN, July 23 (RIA Novosti) – Police in the Magadan region has detained a 17-year-old teen who confessed to having stolen 10 cars and sinking some of them in a local lake, a Magadan police spokesperson said.

“In order to locate and retrieve the stolen vehicles from the lake, police requested the assistance of the regional search-and-rescue unit from the Ministry of Emergencies,” the spokesperson said.

“After a brief search, the divers discovered the vehicles at the bottom of the [Glinka] lake and brought them to the shore,” the official said.

An investigation and assessment of damages to stolen cars are underway, he said.

The teenage ‘car sinker’ is likely to face criminal charges, the official added.

Almost twice the size of Portugal, the sparsely-populated Magadan Region is home to just 100,000 people who endure its harsh climate.

Located in Russia’s Far East and surrounded by mountains, the place is so remote that one can normally get there only by sea or plane.

It also has a notorious past linked to Stalin's labor camps.
