WASHINGTON, July 17 (RIA Novosti) – The work of revered Soviet film director Andrei Tarkovsky will be featured in a new retrospective by the California-based nonprofit cultural organization American Cinematheque, The Los Angeles times reported this week.

"Ocean of Dreams: The Visionary Cinema of Andrei Tarkovsky" will feature five movies by the director, who only completed seven feature films in a career that spanned three decades.

Frequently at odds with the Soviet authorities, Tarkovksy’s films explored metaphysical and even religious themes. The retrospective opens Friday with his philosophical sci-fi film “Solaris,” which was remade in 2002 by American director Steven Soderbergh.

The other films featured in the program are “The Sacrifice,” “The Mirror,” “Nostalghia” and “Andrei Rublev,” Tarkovsky’s epic based on the life of the famous Russian icon painter.

The retrospective runs July 19-27 with screenings split between the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood and the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica.
