Egyptian prosecutors have launched a criminal case against the country’s deposed President Mohammed Morsi, the state-run EGYNews website reported on Saturday.

MOSCOW, July 14 (RIA Novosti) - Egyptian prosecutors have launched a criminal case against the country’s deposed President Mohammed Morsi, the state-run EGYNews website reported on Saturday.

The Egyptian army ousted Morsi, who narrowly won the country’s first free presidential election last June with 51.7 percent of the vote, following mass nationwide protests against the rule of the Islamist president. His current whereabouts remain unknown, but he is rumored to be kept in an undisclosed military location.

Egyptian prosecutor's office said in a statement the case was launched following complaints against the former president and eight prominent members of the Muslim Brotherhood and its political wing, the Freedom and Justice Party. Several unnamed Brotherhood members are also under investigation.

Prosecutors said they had received complaints of espionage, inciting violence and measures that damaged the country’s economy.

Meanwhile, supporters of Morsi continue their sit-in in front of Rabaa Al-Adawiya Mosque in Nasr City, demanding his release.
