TOKYO, July 13 (RIA Novosti) – An exhibition featuring Yuka the baby mammoth, which was found in Russia in 2010 and is thought to be 39,000 years old, opened to the public in Japan on Saturday, local media report.

The mammoth carcass is on show in a chilled display cabinet with the temperature held constant at 14 Fahrenheit (-10 Celsius) to prevent the remains deteriorating. Exhibition organizers agree with the scientists’ verdict: this is a particularly well-preserved mammoth.

The mammoth’s blood, hair and soft tissues were all found to have survived the millennia that have passed surprisingly well.

Earlier this year, Russian scientists started a detailed examination of the mammoth’s brain, in an attempt to better understand their behavior.

The exhibition, which also features a wooly rhinoceros from a similar time period, will run through September 19 in the Japanese city of Yokohama, local media report.
