MOSCOW, June 29 (RIA Novosti) – At least two people have been killed in the northern Egyptian city of Alexandria as both supporters and opponents of President Mohamed Morsi held demonstrations across the country, media reported Friday.

Pro- and anti-government protesters clashed Friday in the Sidi Gaber neighborhood in Alexandria, outside of the local headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), Al Jazeera reported Saturday.

The Qatar-based broadcaster cited local health officials as saying two people were killed: an American was stabbed and an Egyptian was fatally shot.

In Alexandria, Egypt’s second largest city, dozens were injured in clashes, the BBC reported Friday. Protesters set on fire the office of the Muslim Brotherhood, which backs Morsi, and riot police have reportedly been called in.

Thousands of Morsi’s supporters gathered in the capital Cairo as political violence kept worsening across the country, Al Jazeera said.

The Cairo rallies were calm, but tensions are high ahead of an opposition-planned nationwide anti-government protests due Sunday, at which protesters will demand that Morsi step down.
